In this study, uncured prepreg was conditioned at 70%, 80% and 90% relative humidity and at 35 °C. Conditioned prepreg was laid up into quasi-isotropic laminates and cured using vacuum bag only (VBO) processing (lowpressure), and autoclave processing. Moisture uptake in the resin was measured using coulometric Fischer titration. Void content was measured by image analysis of polished sections of cured laminates. Void fractions increased substantially with increasing moisture content in VBO processed laminates, while autoclave-processed parts remained void-free. Experimental results were consistent with trends predicted using a diffusion-based analytical model. The findings are discussed in the context of causes of voids in prepreg composites.

Influence of Interleaved Films on the Mechanical Properties of Carbon Fiber Fabric/Polypropylene Thermoplastic Composites
A laminated composite was produced using a thermoplastic prepreg by inserting an interleaved film with the same type of matrix as the prepreg during the lay-up process to improve the low interlaminar properties, which is a known weakness of laminated composites. Carbon fiber fabric (CFF) and polypropylene (PP) were used to manufacture the thermoplastic prepregs. Eight prepregs were used to prod...

Al-SiC composites are among the most demanding metal matrix composites due to their excellent strength, good ductility, good corrosion resistance, low coefficient of thermal expansion and reasonable price. Manufacturing of cast metal matrix composites usually involves some problems such as inhomogeneous distribution of the particles due to poor wetability of ceramics to molten alloys, porosity ...
متن کاملMoisture Diffusion Properties of Fabric Composite (Glass Fiber/Epoxy Resin)
In this study, the effect of hygrothermal conditioning on the moisture diffusion properties of the fabric composite (glass fiber/epoxy resin) was investigated. The water uptake of the specimens conditioned in humid environment at different relative humidities (0, 60 and 96 % r.h) at constant temperature (60°C) was evaluated by weight gain measurements. The moisture diffusion properties of the f...
متن کاملEffect of Moisture Exchange on Interface Formation in the Repair System Studied by X-ray Absorption
In concrete repair systems, material properties of the repair material and the interface are greatly influenced by the moisture exchange between the repair material and the substrate. If the substrate is dry, it can absorb water from the repair material and reduce its effective water-to-cement ratio (w/c). This further affects the hydration rate of cement based material. In addition to the chan...
متن کاملEffect of Soil Moisture on Chlorine Deposition (postprint)
The effect of soil moisture on chlorine (Cl2) deposition was examined in laboratory chamber experiments at high Cl2 exposures by measuring the concentration of chloride (Cl−) in soil columns. Soil mixtures with varying amounts of clay, sand, and organic matter and with moisture contents up to 20% (w/w) were exposed to ≈3 × 104 ppm Cl2 vapor. For low water content soils, additional water increas...
